Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
