Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
