A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
