Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
